Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone and Dorgali

Dorgali counts 8035 inhabitants distributed between the village and Cala Gonone. It is one of the biggest districts of Sardinia with 225 kmq territory that includes a wide range of different landscapes. Its enviable natural patrimony consists in the crystalline sea of Golfo di Orosei and the unpolluted mountains of Supramonte.  Dorgali economy is based on handicraft, agriculture, breeding and tourism and it is characterized by the integration of different economical sectors. The sea, the beach and the unpolluted coast constitutes the incredible naturalistic offer of Cala Gonone, famous sea-town just 8 km away from Dorgali. The cliffs above the sea are dotted with caves and hiking paths. Also in the area is one of Europe's deepest gorges, Gola Su Gorropu. The Golfo di Orosei is on the eastern coast of Sardinia, it is delimited by Punta Nera at north and by Capo di Monte Santu in the south. The golf is divided, by a geological border, into two parts that distinguish each other by the different kind of nature and the origin of the territory.  The northern coast   has got a low outline, with sandy beaches and pine forests behind the sand dunes.

Cala Gonone is located in the southern part which is characterized by a high limestone mountain chain, covered by woods and typical Mediterranean vegetation. Monte Irveri, which appears behind Cala Gonone, protects the town from north; one of its sides is plunged into the sea, while the other is linked to the Monte Bardia chain (882 m on sea level). The main tourist destinations are the beaches; most of them are reachable just through the sea, they extend on the coast among cliffs, caves and arches of rock, creating amazing landscapes. The last walking reachable beach is Cala Fuili and its small gorge (cadula), it is located among rocks and a thick vegetation of junipers and Mediterranean bushes that give shadow and coolness to the tourists and climbers who practice free-climbing on the steep cliffs. Cala Fuili is the last beach in the south reachable by car. Going on trekking for two hours by following a path that goes on the opposite side of the asphalted street, it is possible to reach Cala Luna. This itinerary is fascinating and it is possible to use a kayak or a canoe to admire closely several kinds of birds that nest on the coast: the falco della  regina (typical Sardinian falcon), royal seagulls and the rare Corsican seagulls. Navigating just after Cala Fuili. The sea is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing, kayaking, or boating.
