Churches in Ogliastra

There are few buildings of great importance in Ogliastra; in the whole region, there remains only one castle, the Medusa at Lotzorai, constructed during the judiciary era, and of which only the ruins are still seen. There are, however, numerous churches that remain closed except for festivals with parades, music and costume. In Tortolì, those of San Salvatore, San Lussori, and San Gemiliano; while in Baunei, the church of San Pietro di Golgo.
Here are a few others::

 The oldest remaining church is the church of Santa Maria Navarrese built in the 11th century. At the time, it was an isolated site: an ancient urn was discovered under the old altar after 1054. According to legend, the church was built to give thanks for the life of the daughter of the King of Navarro after she was shipwrecked off the coast. Over the years it has been renovated but legend has it that the church was originally linked to the castle of Lotzorai via a series of tunnels. In Barisardo, the church of Nostra Signora di Monserrato, built in the 700's. Inside, there is a painting by Antioco Mainas, a famous Sardinian artist of the 500's. In Baunei, the church of San Nicola di Bari, built in the 600's. Inside, there is a painting by A. Lusso, a Sardinian painter of that period.

 In Tortolì, the church of Sant'Andrea, a Baroque construction of the 700's. Closed for some time due to renovation, inside there is a skull found during excavation.
In Ilbono, the church of La Madonna delle Grazie. According to the legend, the simulacrum was found by fishermen on the beach of Cea; the statuette of the Virgin Mother was loaded onto a cart with no driver, as the fishermen meant for the Virgin Mother herself to decide the destination. The cart arrived in Ilbono, where the statuette has remained ever since.
In Lanusei, the cathedral of Maria Maddalena, completed in 1927, and the rural church of S. Cosimo e S. Damiano located over 1000m above sea level.
In Old Osini, abandoned after the landslide of 1951, a small church dating from 1600 hides among the ruins of the village.
In Elini, the rural church of Madonna del Carmelo is located in Carmine Park, surrounded by picnic areas and fresh water springs. In Talana, the rural church of Sant'Efisio is located just outside Lotzorai. In Triei, in the Parco di Mullò, immersed in nature is the church of Sant'Antonio which dates back to the 18th century.
In Villagrande, in the middle of the woods of Santa Barbara, is the church of Santa Barbara, which holds many festivals.
