Nuraghi

The "Nuraghi"

The nuraghic civilisation was founded by a population of warriors from the Caspian Sea who arrived in Sardinia around 1800 - 1500 BC and, after journeying through Asia Minor, Africa and the Mediterranean, gave rise to the glorious civilisation of the Nuraghi.
Even today people admire and wonder at the most imposing and technically perfect megalithic structures to be found in the whole of Europe and the Mediterranean. These are fortresses built with enormous blocks of stone positioned in panoramic locations overlooking the villages.

The two types of Nuraghi:

Nuraghe a Tholos
A monument in the form of a simple tower recalling a century of unrest. Inside the tower, there is a circular room or cell with its walls projecting inwards, with each stone laying above the former to create a strong structure.

Nuraghe SardegnaCorridor Nuraghi
These are simpler, narrower and lower with respect to the Thalos structures, also called, somewhat impropriately "pseudo-nuraghi". Their denomination is derived from the inner composition, made up of one or more corridors, some with more than one very small room or cell, so much so that the walls take up more space than the actual room.

Etymology of the term "Nuraghe"
The term "nuraghe" to the average linguist is a noun or adjective, which, in various forms, is still present in the current Sardinian language; "Nura", "Nurra", "Mura", etc. meaning pile of stone, cavity, cave, cavernous tomb, etc. If these deductions are exact, the meaning of "Nuraghe" would signify "tomb" or "temple" although there is some doubt with regards to this.
